Linearity in architecture and design.

Interior design employing glass is well explored territory. Designers choose transparent float glass for walls and screens for its purity – formal and substantial – but often because it’s also economical. A choice that’s easy and perfectly understandable.
Yet sometimes the customer demands exclusiveness, character, uniqueness. In such cases the choice of materials – including glass – tends towards sophisticated surfaces capable of expressing the spirit of each particular space.
For these exclusive spaces, designers not infrequently go for elegant, sophisticated simplicity: pure forms, geometries and linearity. A choice that’s never an end in itself but also aiming to satisfy precise functional needs in the long term, as classic and modern architecture teach us. The fluted shafts of Greek columns and the straight lines and right angles favoured by the Bauhaus and Rationalism are similarly iconic.

Choosing satin glass.

Regarding durability over time, this can be achieved by choosing materials that really can provide guarantees. Satin finishing and chemical etching of glass – unlike painting or applying PVC film – definitively modify its surface, as well as enabling unique visual and tactile effects to be produced. Texturing features reflecting high aesthetic standards and sensibility, both fully satisfied by Madras® glass produced by Vitrealspecchi, an Italian company specializing in the chemical processing of flat glass. On the surfaces of Madras® satin glass with linear textures, light refracts and diffuses with a rare delicacy thanks to the ultra-fine processing technique. The same reasons make it very easy to clean.

Each Madras® texture is designed to offer a wide range of aesthetic solutions, all in line with design trends and of great functional value. So the assortment is full in terms of modularity of patterning and surface finishes: satin and shiny, satin with etching, double-sided satin and etched without satin finish.

Functions and applications of linear textures.

The degree of screening is another aspect to look at when considering using satin glass with linear textures. For diffusion of light between spaces whilst maintaining a reasonable level of privacy, it’s best to choose models with a satin base. The textures in this case are very slightly in relief and pleasing to touch. Whereas satin patterns on a transparent ground, perfectly smooth on the surface, make the product see-through and create dynamic visual effects in the double-sided version.

Further, linear textures generated by satin finishing and chemical etching techniques make it possible to define volumes with light. A LED source embedded in the glass highlights the Madras® finish: on intercepting this light, the satin surface reflects it and becomes luminous itself. The choice of colour of the glass is important: to enjoy maximum light transmittance it’s best to use extra-clear.

Functions and applications of linear textures.
All Madras® models in monolithic float glass can be tempered and laminated (with PVB or EVA) for safety applications. Certain models can also be produced on already certified laminated float glass. Lastly, thanks to their wide range of thicknesses and the variety of finishes and performance characteristics, Madras® products with linear patterns have been chosen by top interior designers for doors, partition walls and quality décor solutions for both their own projects and serial production.
